We have just returned from a weekend exhibiting at the Cornwall Design Fair, what a wonderful event! Held in the idyllic setting of Trereife House just outside of Penzance, it is one of the largest and loveliest design fairs Cornwall has to offer. We had a great time exhibiting ourselves, as well as browsing what the other designers had to offer. The quality of the products was really quite astonishing.
There’s a lot that caught our eye, but here are a few of our highlights.
We loved a lot of the printmakers, naturally, and it was lovely to share tips & talk to the talented Lorna Syson, Helen Round, Fiona from Particle Press and Dena of Kiwi Design. They all create such inspiring work, each in their own unique style.
Our stall neighbours were also great. Ken Eardley has beautifully bright ceramic kitchenware designs, we particularly liked his birds. And Nikki Cooksey’s zentangle animal prints were so nice, we just had to buy one...or three!
All in all, it was a great weekend. Cannot wait for next year's show!
The September issue of World of Interiors is out today and we have been featured in the design report section. Yay! A photo of our soaring seagull hand-printed cushion sits happily at the top of the page alongside a great little description of our business. Here at Oat Design we think this is great news. We just love the World of Interiors magazine!
I have a great fondness for fishing boats with a Penzance registration code and after I snapped a few and uploaded the photos to Instagram with the hashtag 'PZboat', I was very much surprised to happen upon the realisation that I was the first to tag them! So, I'm going to bring the beauty that is these adorable little Cornish fishing boats to the masses by continuing to tag every one I see from now on. Hop aboard and join in by photographing these wonderful boats and tagging #PZboat on instagram and twitter.
There is nothing better than waking up to a beautiful day, and for us, no better place to be doing it. Just check out this sunrise!
Oscar, my mischievous pup, and I have a dream. Our dream is to run a small business designing and making beautiful homeware. We want to do just that, and not in any old place, but in our favourite place in the whole world, Cornwall - or home as we call it.
Actually, Oscar's dream probably isn't designing or making anything other than a bit of a mess on his daily small-doggie adventures, but he sure does love it here in Cornwall where he can run around and play in the fields surrounding the little cottage where we live, or chase the odd seagull on a walk along one of the many lovely sandy beaches. We get to spend a lot more time together too which is great.
After living in London for two years we couldn't wait to move back home and start our new adventure. We still miss our London friends (and having dinner at the Havelock Tavern at every opportunity) but it is good to be home.
We've already been hard at work designing and making our first range of Cornwall-inspired, hand-woven, all natural cushions and are really delighted with the finished results. Each cushion takes around five hours to make and is a real labour of love. The fabric is woven by hand from all natural cotton & wool on a rigid heddle loom, then lined and sewn carefully together with a scrumptiously thick natural linen cloth and finished with a massive feather filled cushion pad to make it extra squishy.
Everything we design & make is of the highest quality and though that means we might have to spend a bit more money on getting the very best material, or some of our products take a reeeeally long time for us to make by hand (or by paw), we wouldn't have it any other way. Nothing but the best is good enough!
Hello, I'm Tegen. I'm a designer & maker from Cornwall. As a child I wanted to become a mermaid, but for now I am actually very happy to be building a beautiful homeware and design business with my adorable furry sidekick, Oscar.
